Short Synopsis: Panje is a short branded content documentary to support the Zanzibar (east coast of Africa) based charity foundation PANJE PROJECT.
The film tells the perspectives of three brave women, of three different generations who are fighting to change the picture of the women in Zanzibar. Because of conservative Islamic culture and the absence of modest swimwear community leaders still discourage girls from swimming. Until now. If you live surrounded by water, it makes sense you know how to swim. Especially as many of those women working on the sea or have to travel by boat. But for some women in the world, thanks to local customs and culture, this isn’t the case.
The last decades many boat incidents happened where only men was able to safe themselves. And women had to drown. The Zanzibar based charity foundation PANJE PROJECT has made it possible for local women and girls to get into the water with full-length swimsuits that covers their body. So that they can enter the water without compromising their cultural and religious beliefs. Not only teaching them swimming skills, but aquatic safety and drowning prevention techniques. The group has empowered its students to teach others, creating a sustainable cycle.
PANJE PROJECT wants to educate and inspire women to take action. With free swim classes for young and old, they learn to feel safe and connected to the sea. The picture of the women floating in the water symbolizes their empowerment.
