Short Synopsis: | In this series, we follow prison guard Martin as he supports inmate Nicklas in his effort to become a better father to his 13-year-old son, Magnus. The story is inspired by real events from inside the Danish prison system and was filmed on location in active prisons. To ensure authenticity, the director conducted on-duty research with prison guards, and real-life officers were present on set for ongoing input and discussion. The result is a drama rooted in lived experience. Unlike traditional prison fiction, the series avoids violence, power struggles, and sensationalism. Instead, it focuses on quiet psychological tension and human complexity. The drama unfolds in small, telling moments: hesitation, failure, care. Denmark faces a growing crisis in recruiting prison guards—affecting both safety and the rehabilitative possibilities for inmates. A contributing factor is how the profession is often misrepresented in popular media: as extreme, dehumanised, or corrupt. Our aim is not to deliver a campaign message, but to shift perception. We want to create recognition of a profession, a reality, and a form of emotional labour rarely portrayed with nuance. At its core, it’s a human story about connection, redemption, and the quiet strength behind helping someone change. Another way out is shortlisted for two categories at this years YDA. |
