Short Synopsis:	Papua New Guinea, home to hundreds of tribes and languages, has a long history of tribal warfare. But an influx of mercenaries and automatic weapons has inflamed the cycle of violence. Tribal conflicts are a frequent occurrence in Papua New Guinea’s highlands, but an influx of automatic weapons has made clashes deadlier. The emeregence of ‘Hire men’ has become a real concern. They are mercenaries who are paid by warring tribes to fight on their behalf. Their most valued possessions are either assault rifles or shotguns paid for by political and non-political sponsors. Chiefs and elders who once commanded power and status were now replaced by younger men with money and the means to buy and own weapons. This has had a direct influence on provincial and national politics as well as traditional governance structures. Thus destroying centuries of tradition, and the lives of innocent men, women and children, for selfish short term gain. Not only are this hurting the fellow countrymen, but also hurting themselves.
